Oštro is a non-profit online media that nurtures investigative and data journalism, champions the »right to know« as one of the fundamental human rights, and contributes to the cultivation of future generations of journalists.

Oštro is financed from voluntary contributions, donations, and funds acquired through public tenders and calls of various organisations. We obtain some resources from our journalistic work, publishing articles in other media, and carrying out workshops, education courses and counselling.

Non-profit media are few and far between in Croatia, in Slovenia as well. Globally, however, they established themselves as a social and a professional corrective because they refuse to abide by commercial logic of the established media. This logic has by now almost entirely – in many places by force – alienated journalism from its core mission: to provide comprehensive information to the public and monitor the centres of power.

The income of many local newsrooms has been slowly but steadily vanishing into thin air. From there, all too many of our colleagues also disappeared, while some of them still fight for their positions and for pockets of journalism with a backbone.

One of key principles of non-profit media is radical transparency of their activities and finances and Oštro already closely follows this principle. And now is also the right time to invite our readers to contribute to our work.

We invite you to become a correspondent member of Oštro's editorial team. This membership comes with some symbolic benefits and is a novelty in the Croatian media environment.

With you, our future members, we wish to discuss important stories of our time at occasional public editorial meetings, and to serve the public interest together. All members who will wish to do so will have the option to collaborate with the editorial team during the investigation of stories to which they could contribute their professional knowledge.

Through their membership, our members directly make our journalistic work possible. If members will contribute their knowledge to our work, they will not pay the membership during this time.

We cannot work without resources and we want to invest these resources in producing nothing but high-quality journalism. Without you, there is no us.
